TONIGHT’S SCRIPTURE

“Do not despise these small beginnings.” Zechariah 4:10

SOMETHING TO PONDER

Talking with a good friend recently, he admitted to learning how life has seasons. He’s now in his forties, and with kids and a marriage behind him, he realized how things change and different times call for new skills.

We all experience new seasons. From an early age, in our culture, these times have definite beginnings and endings. School leads us through new levels and subjects. We celebrate birthdays as major milestones. Yet as we get older, new seasons become more stressful and less expected. But the seasons keep coming.

The whole Christian life is about starting over, beginning anew. Sometimes God takes us into a place where we must start over, whether a relationship or a job or place to live. Even if we know we need to begin again, this causes stress and anxiety

God called Abraham to “start over” at the age of 80, not the time most people change their whole lives from security to wandering. Yet God did this with a promise. The new start came with God’s call to something greater, in Abraham’s case, countless descendants in a promised land. Yet Abraham only experienced the little beginning, one son. That miracle son did pass on the promise to the hundreds of thousands of people in Israel.

The Father begins small, gives grace to the humble, because then he gets the glory. Let’s not “despise” these new seasons or beginnings. God can do great things with little, like fish and loaves. Let’s trust him with the new. He’ll be faithful to make much of it, either here or in eternity.

YOUR NIGHTLY PRAYER

Heavenly Father,
Thank you for new beginnings, even when they feel difficult. You lead us through seasons, whether joyful or uncertain, but you don’t change and remain faithful. Give us the courage to trust you through the new season and changes. Like Abraham, help us obey even when the road ahead feels unknown. Grow great things for you from our small starts.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

THREE THINGS TO MEDITATE UPON

1. What is a time you’ve had a new start that felt wonderful? What is a time when a new start was extremely difficult?

2. How many people in the Bible did God call to a new beginning? What was the ultimate result?

3. What is the new beginning God has called you to in this season? What is he calling you to do?
